Chümoukedima (Nagaland), Oct 22 – The Nagaland United Sports Club (NUSC) has officially joined the Indian Football League (IFL), marking a significant milestone as the first club from Nagaland to compete in the country’s national second-tier league. This entry is a moment of immense pride for the state, which has long followed national football from afar.
When the 2026-27 season kicks off on October 30, the Chümoukedima-based club will carry Nagaland’s aspirations onto the national stage. Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the club's office and Elevenses Cafe Lounge at the Regional Centre for Sporting Excellence in Sovima on Thursday, underscoring the state's support. Dr. Rio expressed his happiness, stating, “This is the beginning of a journey, and I hope the club will give its best and make this dream come true, inspiring the youth of Nagaland and Nagas wherever they are.”
Other dignitaries present included Temjen Imna Along, Minister for Tourism and Higher Education, and KT Sukhalu, MLA. Representing NUSC were Co-Founders Rusemtong Longkumer and Kechangulie Rio, alongside President John Longkumer. IFL CEO Nildeep Mondal and Head of Operations Abhishek Yadav were also present, discussing future grassroots development.
Founded in 2024 to nurture local talent, NUSC quickly rose through the ranks, finishing third in the 2025 Nagaland Super League. The club will play its home matches at the Chümoukedima Football Stadium in Dimapur, bringing national league football to Nagaland. Dr. Rio highlighted the club's goal: “to create a platform and opportunity for our talented youth, so that they can progress from playing in villages, districts and communities to the state and national levels.”
NUSC's entry was facilitated by an agreement with Aizawl FC, approved by the All-India Football Federation (AIFF), allowing NUSC to take over Aizawl FC’s IFL sporting rights. This makes Nagaland a new venue for the 2026-27 season, joining Shillong Lajong and Chanmari to strengthen the Northeast's presence in the IFL.
The club faces its first challenge on October 30, an away fixture against Real Kashmir at the TRC Stadium in Srinagar. Dr. Rio urged the team to play with commitment, discipline, and sportsmanship, aiming for the top and inspiring the next generation.
The IFL Trophy Tour and the launch of NUSC’s debut season jerseys also took place, building excitement for the upcoming season.
