Injury-hit Stormers confirm capture of double world champion Mbonambi

Double World Cup winner Bongi Mbonambi has returned to the Stormers on a one-year deal.

The Springbok hooker, who made 74 appearances in his first spell with the club between 2015 and 2021, moves to Cape Town from the Sharks, after his contract there was terminated with the agreement of both parties following a disciplinary dispute.

Mbonambi is available for selection with immediate effect and is set to feature in the United Rugby Championship encounter with Ulster at DHL Stadium on Saturday.

With hookers André-Hugo Venter, Deon Fourie, Lukhanyo Vokozela, Almero Keizer and Luca Bakkes all injured and JJ Kotzé currently serving a suspension, the Stormers have turned to Mbonambi to help them through a difficult period.

“We all know the quality that Bongi brings and it is fantastic that we were able to arrange this deal at such short notice. We are grateful to both Bongi and the Sharks for helping to make this happen,” said Director of Rugby John Dobson

“Bongi became a Springbok while playing for us and has proven himself among the best in the world in the middle of the front row.

“We have been hit hard with both injuries and suspension to our hookers, so we are delighted to welcome Bongi back to the fold,” he said.

Mbonambi said that he is looking forward to making an impact for the DHL Stormers again.

“I spent many incredible years playing for the DHL Stormers, so to be back in Cape Town surrounded by so many people I know and respect is fantastic.

“This club is in a great space and I want to do all I can to contribute to the cause,” he said.
