Danny Webb keeping feet on the ground after Chesterfield crush Crewe

Chesterfield assistant manager Danny Webb said it was important not to get carried away after their 5-1 home victory over Crewe.

Josh Koroma, Tom Naylor, Fraser Bryden and Liam Mandeville netted for the hosts, with Josh Stephenson also scoring an own goal. Charlie McNeill grabbed Crewe’s solitary reply.

Webb said: “Everything that could have gone for us did in the first half and it’s been coming.

“We’ve had a lot of chances, a lot of missed opportunities to put games out of sight, haven’t done that and then conceded the odd poor goal, which together is a great mix to get three points.

“It’s important we all stay with our feet on the ground when you win 5-1 at home to a good team like Crewe, as much as when you lose one and don’t play fantastic. You have to be consistent.

“It’s important we turned up and put on a performance that everyone could be proud of, and the boys did that.

“We would have taken any sort of win before the game, but to be five up at half-time is a rarity, certainly, in my career as coaching.

“Deep down, you’re thinking it would take a lot to not win the game, but you don’t want it to end up like a 5-3, 5-4. You think, oh God, where does that come from?

“I’m sure Lee [Bell] and his staff will say they were poor and they made mistakes, but I thought we probably provoked that a little bit.”

Crewe boss Lee Bell took full responsibility for the defeat, admitting he got it “drastically wrong”.

Bell said: “I can only apologise to the 720 fans that have travelled here. I got it drastically wrong.

“It’s my responsibility to give the players information about the opposition. It’s my responsibility to set up the team to go out and win a football game and I take full responsibility.

“We tried to deliver the information on how Chesterfield would play. They’re quite comfortably the best team we’ve played in this division.

“They couldn’t get to grips with it and when you go one-nil down so soon in the game against a team that was buoyant, it becomes, as you can see, a treacherous afternoon.

“You have to just keep marching forward. They’re a solid group and I love them to bits. We just couldn’t get close enough to them.

“I tried and tried to change things to make it so they could get close to them. But I’ve got to look at what I’ve done this afternoon in terms of how I’ve set up here away at Chesterfield.

“I’ve got to make sure I deliver my messages and what I’m expecting of the team much clearer.”
