Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick plans to rely on collective positioning rather than a specific plan to contain Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé ahead of El Clásico at the Spotify Camp Nou, according to reports in Mundo Deportivo. The Blaugrana enter the fixture following their first defeat of the season at Paris Saint-Germain’s Parc des Princes, yet the technical staff intends to maintain continuity in selection and defensive structure.
Flick dismissed the notion of deploying a shadow defender specifically to track the France international. Instead, the German manager emphasized spatial awareness and team compactness during pre-match press briefings.
“It is important our positioning, with and without the ball,” Flick said. “Without the ball, it is about maintaining the right distance between players, being compact, and having the ball pressed. It is very important when you play with a high line, because I think if we have all this, it is much easier to defend for the defensive line. It is what we have to do.”
The tactical approach mirrors the strategy Flick deployed against Real Madrid in October 2024. In that meeting, a defensive line anchored by Iñigo Martínez and Pau Cubarsí caught Mbappé offside eight times, neutralizing several scoring opportunities through disciplined offside-trap execution.
Flick indicated he does not intend to disrupt his central defensive pairing, singling out the partnership between teenager Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín for praise. The duo has started together in six of Barcelona’s 12 matches this campaign.
“‘Cuba’ and Gerard are playing a great season. What they are doing is incredible. They work together, they talk… You can see that they have grown together and I am very happy about it,” Flick said.
Squad depth remains a pressing concern for the technical staff. While Martín has occasionally rested and Cubarsí has sat out three fixtures, a long-term injury to Andreas Christensen has severely limited central defensive alternatives. Flick has kept midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Rodri under consideration for emergency defensive duties and recently called up youth prospect Àlex Campos to train with the senior squad.
The high-stakes clash arrives as Barcelona looks to rebound immediately from its European setback in Paris and maintain momentum at the domestic summit. Real Madrid arrives boasting world-class attacking firepower led by Mbappé, putting the Blaugrana’s trademark high defensive line under rigorous examination on home turf.
