It’s never too early to start thinking about playoffs, and with two weeks left in the regular season, teams have already begun shifting into playoff mode.
With Week 9 having kicked off Thursday, here’s a look at some of the most intriguing teams and potential playoff matchups.
East Ascension and Dutchtown are two teams to watch in the nonselect bracket. The Ascension Parish teams have 7-1 records and sit atop the District 5-5A standings. As it stands, the Spartans are No. 4 in the Division I nonselect power ratings, which would give them a first-round bye.
East Ascension lost in the second round last year against Central, but a first-round bye could set up a favorable path for the Spartans this year.
Dutchtown is currently the No. 9 seed. The Griffins would face Central in the first round if the playoffs started Thursday, which would be a rematch of last year’s first-round matchup. Central won last year’s game, but a rematch would be interesting. Dutchtown and East Ascension will play each other in Week 10, which could have major playoff implications.
In the select bracket, Catholic (5-3) looks poised for a first-round bye after a 1-3 start. The Bears close out the year with Woodlawn and Legacy the School of Sport Science (Texas).
A team to watch is Plaquemine. The Green Devils (5-3) will play Madison Prep for a District 6-4A title and sit at 13th in the power ratings. If the team stays there, Plaquemine could face most of its playoff games on the road after a trip to the semifinals last year.
In the select bracket, St. Michael (6-2) is No. 9 in the power ratings. The Warriors, who get Tara (1-7) and Broadmoor (5-3) to close out the year, are just one spot out of a first-round bye. Two more wins could be enough for St. Michael to start its playoff run at home.
Donaldsonville (3-5) is on the edge of the playoff bubble at No. 25. The Tigers won a crucial game last week against Springfield. Donaldsonville will close out the year against Northeast and Slaughter Charter. Both games could be huge to helping the Tigers sure up its spot in the playoffs.
The Division III select bracket features some of the state’s best teams. University High (6-2) locked up District 6-3A after its 58-30 win over West Feliciana. The Cubs are No. 3 in the power ratings and look poised for a first-round bye after a 1-2 start.
Dunham (5-3) is also just outside of a first-round bye at No. 10 in the power ratings. With star quarterback Elijah Haven back, the Tigers look to win their last two games to move into the top eight for a bye.
The top team in Division IV nonselect is East Feliciana. The Tigers (7-1) hold the top seed, but will face a big test against Kentwood (8-0) on Friday night. If East Feliciana can win out and hold onto that top spot, then it would be the school’s first No. 1 seed in program history.
In Division IV select, the thing to watch will be how many local schools earn a bye. Ascension Catholic (7-1) and Kentwood (8-0) are the No. 3 and No. 5 seeds. The third team looking for a bye is Southern Lab (8-0). The Kittens sit at No. 9 and will likely need teams ahead of them to lose to try to earn a first-round bye.
