For the first time since the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards began in 2001, no Nigerian player has been nominated for the Women’s Player of the Year award.
The development marks a significant moment for Nigerian women’s football, given the country’s long-standing dominance and history of success on the African continent.
Over the years, Nigerian female footballers have earned recognition for their performances at both club and international levels, with several players featuring prominently among the continent’s top performers.
The Super Falcons have also maintained a strong reputation in African football, having won multiple Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) titles and produced players who have distinguished themselves on the international stage.
However, the absence of a Nigerian player from the Women’s Player of the Year shortlist represents a break from the country’s longstanding presence at the awards, raising questions about the recognition of Nigerian talent in this year’s nominations.
The CAF Awards celebrate outstanding achievements across African football, recognising players, coaches and other key figures who have made significant contributions to the sport.
