The British No.5 reached her first WTA tour-level final with a three set win over China’s Sun
Harriet Dart reached her first ever WTA tour-level final after another comeback victory saw her overcome Chinese teenager Xinran Sun at the Guangzhou Open.
On the back of an impressive victory over fifth seed Paula Badosa, Dart continued her incredible run in Guangzhou by ousting Sun in a three set fightback taking the match 7-5 6-7 (1-7) 0-6.
16-year-old Sun, the current ITF Junior World No.1, started strongly and held Dart at bay over a close run first set - in which the Brit failed to close out - before clinching the opener 7-5 by breaking Dart’s serve for a third time in the match.
Pressure mounted on the 30-year-old Dart across an even tighter second set which saw her save multiple match points before forcing a tiebreak that swung the momentum firmly in Dart’s favour. The Brit was ruthless and conceded just one point in the tiebreak to bring the match level and force a deciding set.
Sun looked like she was beginning to tire - she required a medical timeout for treatment on her left - and Dart took advantage by sweeping the final set without conceding a game to claim victory in close to two hour and a half hours.
"It's been a really long journey. I've wanted it so much, so badly - sometimes too much. To finally be here means the world," an emotional Dart said following her victory.
"I found it tough out there. It was a rollercoaster. Playing in this part of the competition, more nerves and more feelings come out. I was really battling with myself.
"I'm proud of the second set and was able to turn it quickly."
Dart once again produced on the back of her first serve winning 68% of those points and improved on her second serve (comparing to her performance against Badosa) by taking 51% of points on her second serve as well. Eight aces were sent down by the Brit and show won an impressive seven out of 10 break points (70%) which gave her control of the match.
The victory continues a superb run of form for Dart who came through two rounds of qualifying to reach the tournament proper before claiming wins over Tatiana Prozorova, Janice Tjen, Badosa and now Sun.
Dart will face either Spain’s Kaitlin Quevedo or Austria’s Lilli Tagger, who is also seeded fourth for the tournament, in the final on Sunday. Should she win she will return to the top 100 in the WTA rankings having already climbed to 101st place due to her run in Guangzhou.
