Busari warns Nigeria’s Flamingos not to underestimate Venezuela in U-17 World Cup quarter-final

Nigeria coach Akeem Busari has cautioned the Flamingos against complacency as they prepare to face Venezuela in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The teams meet on Sunday at Mohammed VI Football Complex Pitch 4 in Rabat, with the winner securing a place in the semi-finals.

Nigeria reached the last eight after a 2-1 victory over Mexico on Thursday. Venezuela, meanwhile, produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises by eliminating Germany, the competition favourites, with a 1-0 win.

Busari says Venezuela’s result underlines the quality of the challenge facing his side, but believes Nigeria have the ability to progress if they perform at their best.

“Every team in the competition is a contender; everyone could be a champion,” Busari told FIFA.

“Venezuela won their game, so they are a good side. But Nigeria are too, so on the day it’ll be decided over 90 minutes, and we’ll all give our best.”

The quarter-final is scheduled to kick off at 5:00 pm Nigerian time on Sunday.
