Tottenham’s Mathys Tel has earned further recognition after his standout display against Chelsea, with WhoScored including the Spurs forward in their Matchweek Eight Team of the Week.

Tel’s heroics against Chelsea on Saturday evening have already earned recognition, with BBC Sport pundit Troy Deeney including the Spurs forward in his Matchweek Eight Team of the Week following his impressive showing.

It is hardly surprising to see the widespread praise for Tel, as he grabbed the winner against the Blues with a solo run from his own half, riding challenges from Acheampong and Lacroix before scoring from outside the box.

Deeney wrote about the Spurs man: “Tel had a real difficult start to his career at Spurs. I thought for the first time against Chelsea we saw what Spurs saw in him: pace, power, hard work, and then obviously an unbelievable goal to finish it as well.”

Whoscored joins praise for Tottenham’s Mathys Tel

Indeed, the former Bayern Munich man has found it difficult since his move to Spurs, having only scored eight goals in 66 appearances.

But the plaudits did not stop there for Tel, with WhoScored also recognising the winger’s electric display against Chelsea. The football statistics website named the Frenchman in its team of the week for matchweek eight, just like Deeney.

However, WhoScored went further by appending a rating to his performance, handing him an 8.41 – the fourth highest of the players included, with only Nicolas Jackson, Gabriel and James Hill scoring higher.

Writing about Tel’s performance, they said: “Mathys Tel produced one of the most memorable moments of the weekend, scoring a late goal to help Tottenham secure a 2-0 victory at Chelsea. The forward collected the ball inside his own half, drove past Maxence Lacroix and finished low into the bottom corner in the 87th minute.

“Tel recorded two shots, one on target, and created two key passes. He also won two aerial duels and seven duels overall, demonstrating his willingness to compete physically as well as provide an attacking threat.

“The goal sealed a significant victory for Tottenham, who had struggled for results at Stamford Bridge. Spurs had won only one of their previous 34 Premier League visits to Chelsea, making the result an important milestone.

“Tottenham had taken the lead through a Mike Penders own goal before Cole Palmer’s red card left Chelsea with an even more difficult task. Tel’s late strike ensured there would be no comeback and gave Spurs a memorable away win.

“Tel’s finish was the highlight, but his overall performance reflected a forward who was willing to press, compete and create opportunities. For Tottenham, the victory offered a valuable boost, while Tel strengthened his case for a more regular role in the starting XI.”

De Zerbi praises Tel but highlights where the Spurs winger must improve

That strike was Tel’s first of the season, and it clearly meant so much to the young winger, who was delighted to have helped his team secure the victory.

He admitted it was special, saying: “We created a lot of chances today, we walk out together, the goal is something special for me, I’m happy about it and let’s keep pushing now.”

Roberto De Zerbi did not hold back his praise for Tel, although the Spurs boss highlighted two key areas the winger still needs to improve.

He said: “But Mathys Tel played very well. I think we won the game with two wingers, Kudus and Mathys, they made the difference.”

On what Tel must improve, he added: “Mathys needs to play to understand football, become calmer, but he is a big talent.”

With Savio still sidelined through injury, Tel could be set for another start when Spurs face Crystal Palace – and he will surely be hoping to add to his tally for the season.
