Margaux Maquet defeats Matilde Jorge at Internationaux Féminins de la Vienne

At the Internationaux Féminins de la Vienne in Poitiers, 25-year-old Belgian qualifier Margaux Maquet defeated seventh-seeded Portuguese player Matilde Jorge 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, lanouvellerepublique.fr reported. Ranked No. 514 globally, Maquet fought past her 247th-ranked opponent in a hard-fought three-set battle to secure a significant early-round upset on the professional circuit.

Victory Over Matilde Jorge in Poitiers

The decisive moment arrived when Jorge’s final shot sailed wide of the baseline, prompting a muted, almost timid fist pump from the winner. Competing in her first-ever $75,000 tournament, Maquet had already fought through the qualifying rounds in France, defeating Latvia’s Diana Marcinkevica 6-3, 6-2 to earn her place in the main draw. Facing Jorge on the main courts required an immediate step up in intensity following her qualification matches. “It was a solid girl and I played a big match to qualify. I knew I had to do it again today against a seeded player,” Maquet said after the match, reflecting on her path through the tournament brackets.

Rapid Rise on the ITF Circuit

The win in Poitiers highlights a productive six-month surge for Maquet, who began her ascent ranked No. 884 before climbing to No. 514 in the ITF rankings. On April 19, she claimed her first professional title at the $15,000 tournament in Orlando, Florida, defeating American player Emery Combs 6-0, 6-3 on clay. That victory followed a grueling 2-hour and 41-minute semifinal contest played just a day prior. Beyond her Orlando title, Maquet reached another $15,000 final in Alkmaar, Netherlands, and a semifinal appearance in Dinard, France.

Transition From American Collegiate Tennis

A native of Meslin-l’Evêque, Belgium, Maquet built her foundation through the United States collegiate tennis system before turning professional. She initially competed for the Charlotte 49ers before transferring to finish her collegiate career with the University of Alabama tennis program. Reflecting on her transition to the professional tour, Maquet admitted to experiencing nerves as success approached in tighter matches, noting after her opening win in Poitiers that maintaining her baseline level of play remained her primary objective despite fluctuating results in recent weeks.
