Mayo's Aoife Loftus and Malea Diehn both reach state singles semifinals

Mayo seniors Aoife Loftus and Malea Diehn, who met in last year's state singles championship match, have both reached the state semifinals.

Mayo's Aoife Loftus returns the ball to Century's Catherine Li during the Section 1, Class 3A, girls tennis team final Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, at the Rochester Athletic Club. On Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026, Loftus won a pair of matches at the state individual tournament at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS — The two singles competitors from last year's state Class 3A state girls tennis tournament championship at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center have both reached Friday's 8 a.m. semifinals.

Both girls are Mayo seniors, state defending champion Aoife Loftus and runner-up Malea Diehn. Loftus, the No. 1 seed, won both her matches Thursday in straight sets. That sets up an extremely tough semifinal for her as she'll have to take on Edina's No. 3-seeded Rashi Singh. Singh beat Loftus in straight sets in Wednesday's team competition.

Diehn faces No. 5 seed Lucy Saari of Forest Lake in her semifinal match.

In Class 3A doubles, Mayo's No. 1-seeded Eli Elder and Grace Pickering made it to Friday's semifinals. They will play No. 5 seed Emily Leviton and Caroline Yang of Minnetonka at 8 a.m. The finals in singles and doubles — in all three classes — are at 11:30 a.m. at their respective sites. Third and fifth-place matches are also at 11:30 a.m.

• In Class 2A singles at Life Time Bloomington South, Stewartville's Olivia Regal had the unenviable task of facing top seed Elizabeth Payne of Holy Angels in the quarterfinals. Payne won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

That eliminated Regal from the tournament.

In Class 2A doubles, Winona's Anna Bricco and Aundra Aarre dropped their opening match, sending them to the consolation round where they also lost, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6 tie-breaker).

• In Class A singles at Inner City Tennis in Minneapolis, Cannon Falls' Livia Tennessen has reached the semifinals. Tennessen, seeded fifth, upset No. 4 seed Tabitha Barkosky of Maple River in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Next up for Tennessen is a semifinal match with top seed Chloe Alley of Minnehaha Academy.

In Class 1A doubles, Lake City's No. 3-seeded team of Therese Bauer and Rylee Thieren won a pair of matches Thursday. In the quarterfinals, the juniors' tandem romped to a 6-0, 6-0 win over St. James' Valeria Aguilar and Ruby Ciske.

They will play Litchfield's Isla Dille and Molly Patten in the semifinals. Dille and Patten are seeded second.
