LSU offensive lineman Sean Thompkins has been sued by Baylor for failing to pay a settlement amount related to breaking his NIL agreement when he transferred.
According to a complaint filed with the 170th State District Court in Texas on Thursday, Thompkins was signed with Baylor through June 30, 2027, but his deal was terminated when he requested to enter the transfer portal one day before it opened in January.
A settlement agreement for $85,000 was reached on May 13, but Thompkins did not follow through with paying the money, according to the complaint. A demand for payment was sent to Thompkins and his lawyer on Sept. 22, according to an exhibit filed alongside Baylor’s complaint.
That demand would have come days after Ole Miss served LSU edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen, who allegedly broke his revenue-sharing agreement when he transferred. Ole Miss has also sued offensive lineman Devin Harper, who also followed Lane Kiffin to LSU, for buyout dollars associated with his previous contract.
Ole Miss has sought $550,000 from Umanmielen and $400,000 from Harper. In that case, Ole Miss asked LSU for reimbursement on behalf of the athletes but LSU declined, saying it was not a party to the contract.
In a settlement agreement attached to Thursday’s filing, Thompkins was expected to assure he “directs and instructs LSU and/or Playfly Sports to make all such payments to Baylor University, as directed by the Baylor Athletics General Manager.”
LSU declined to comment.
Thompkins was instructed to pay $50,000 of the total on or before Aug. 10, and then he was due to make three separate $11,666.67 payments.
They were to be made on or before Sept. 10, Oct. 10 and Nov. 10, respectively.
“Unfortunately we now find that Mr. Thompkins has not kept his word, and has made no payment, despite required payment dates having come and gone,” the law firm representing Baylor, Beard Kultgen, said in its Sept. 22 demand letter.
If payment wasn’t made by Sept. 30, the law firm said the university would commence with formal legal proceedings to recover the settlement amount, plus interest.
Thompkins, who started five games for Baylor as a sophomore, hasn’t seen as much action for LSU. He’s behind left tackle Jordan Seaton and right tackle Weston Davis on the depth chart. He’s appeared in eight games, but mostly on special teams.
