Back
Renato Gonçalves Renato Goncalves is the deputy manager of Barca Blaugranes and has been writing for the site since all the way back in 2014. He’s a massive sports fan and has been crazy about Barcelona ever since Rivaldo scored that bicycle kick in 2001.
Frenkie de Jong made his first start of the season for Barcelona in Saturday’s dominant 6-1 against Alavés, and the Dutchman played out of position at center-back due to the many injuries in defense.
De Jong has played center-back before for Ajax and Barça but it was his first proper start at the position in Hansi Flick’s system, and Frenkie looked comfortable and assured in his new role.
His passing from the back was as advertised, but he also had some really good moments covering for his defensive partners and won several duels on the ground and in the air.
Frenkie wants to be a regular starter for Barça again but the competition in midfield is fierce, and it’s safe to say De Jong has given Hansi Flick at least some food for thought about his ability to play consistently at center-back even after all the injured defenders return — or at least until Barça sign a center-back in January.
So today’s Barca Blaugranes Question of the Day is:
How do you rate Frenkie de Jong’s performance at center-back against Alavés?
Now it’s over to you! Feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and answers in the comments section below!
