Nigeria’s Super Falcons and three other Nigerian football personalities have earned nominations for the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Awards following the release of the shortlist by the continental football governing body.
The nominees, announced through CAF’s official social media handle on Tuesday, November 3, feature representatives from 10 countries competing across three individual categories: Women’s Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year. Nigeria also secured a nomination in the National Team of the Year category.
Edo Queens goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma was shortlisted for the Goalkeeper of the Year award, while Benfica and Falconets forward Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Robo Queens and Flamingos forward Oluwakemi Adegbuyi were nominated for the Young Player of the Year category.
The Super Falcons also made the shortlist for the National Team of the Year award, recognising Nigeria’s place among the national teams nominated for the 2026 edition. However, no Nigerian player was included in the Women’s Player of the Year category.
Akekoromowei, Adegbuyi lead Nigerian nominees
Akekoromowei and Adegbuyi will compete against eight other young footballers for the Young Player of the Year award.
The category also features Benin Republic’s Romaine Gandonou, Cameroon’s Maëva Nyadjou, Côte d’Ivoire’s Grace-Ruth Sery and N’Sira Ouédraogo, Malawi’s Rose Kadzere, Morocco’s Kautar Azraf, Senegal’s Adji Ndiaye and Tanzania’s Winfrida Gerald.
Their nominations provide another opportunity for Nigeria’s emerging female football talents to gain continental recognition following their performances at club and national team levels.
Uzoma shortlisted alongside African goalkeeping stars
Uzoma’s nomination for Goalkeeper of the Year places her among 10 contenders for the individual honour.
Other nominees include Algeria’s Chloe N’Gazi, Cameroon’s Michaely Bihina, Ghana’s Cynthia Konlan, Malawi’s Mercy Sikelo, Mali’s Fatoumata Karantao and Morocco’s Khadija Er-Rmichi.
Senegal’s Adji Ndiaye, South Africa’s Kaylin Swart and Zambia’s Hazel Nali complete the shortlist.
Notably, Bihina received nominations in both the Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year categories, while Ndiaye is shortlisted for both Goalkeeper of the Year and Young Player of the Year.
No Nigerian in Women’s Player of the Year category
Nigeria failed to secure a nomination in the Women’s Player of the Year category, which features 10 footballers from across the continent.
The nominees include Algeria’s Marine Dafeur, Cameroon’s Marie Ngah Manga, Michaely Bihina and Monique Ngock, Ghana’s Portia Boakye, Malawi’s Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga, Morocco’s Hanane Aït El Haj, South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Zambia’s Barbra Banda.
Malawi international Temwa Chawinga is among the notable names on the shortlist, having also featured in the top 10 of the 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or rankings.
Super Falcons nominated for National Team of the Year
Meanwhile, the Super Falcons will compete for the National Team of the Year award alongside nine other African national teams.
The nominees are Algeria, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa.
Interestingly, Cabo Verde is the only country nominated in the team category without a representative in any of the three individual award categories.
Nigeria’s nomination comes as the Super Falcons continue to feature prominently in African women’s football, having won the Women’s National Team of the Year award at the 2025 CAF Awards.
Winners to emerge in Lagos
The winners of the 2026 CAF Awards will be announced at the awards ceremony scheduled for Monday, December 7, 2026, in Lagos State.
At the 2025 edition, the Super Falcons won the Women’s National Team of the Year award, while Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who represented Brighton, claimed the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year prize for the third consecutive time.
With three Nigerian representatives shortlisted across the individual categories and the Super Falcons competing for the team award, Nigeria will be hoping to secure continental recognition when the winners are announced in December.
