Manchester United retain coach Carrick
EPL: Why I benched Bruno Fernandes against Bournemouth - Carrick

Manchester United have decided to retain Michael Carrick as head coach for their Premier League trip to Chelsea on Saturday, giving him another opportunity to revive the club’s struggling campaign despite mounting pressure following consecutive heavy defeats.

The decision was taken after the club’s hierarchy reviewed Carrick’s position in the wake of a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como and a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, which left United just one point above the Premier League relegation zone. Blueprint reports

According to reports, United chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox held discussions about Carrick’s future at the club’s Carrington training ground on Monday. Although alternatives had reportedly been considered, the 45-year-old was allowed to continue and took training on Tuesday.

The decision means Carrick will lead United against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on October 31, with the coach and his players expected to respond to the club’s poor run of results.

Eight-game winless run puts Carrick under pressure

Carrick’s position came under intense scrutiny after United’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 25, extended their winless run in all competitions to eight matches.

The result left United 16th in the Premier League table with seven points from eight league matches, marking their worst start to a league campaign at this stage since the 1986-87 season.

Bournemouth took control of the encounter through Rayan, who opened the scoring in the 38th minute, before Marcus Tavernier doubled the visitors’ advantage five minutes later. Evanilson added a third in the 71st minute to complete a damaging afternoon for the home side.

The defeat intensified criticism of United’s performances, with supporters booing the players at the final whistle. Carrick, however, received chants of support from sections of the crowd, while much of the anger was directed at the club’s ownership and senior management.

United’s poor form has raised questions about the team’s organisation, intensity and ability to compete consistently, with pressure building on both the coaching staff and the players.

Como defeat sparks tactical disagreement

The crisis deepened after United suffered a 4-1 defeat to Italian side Como in the Champions League on October 21.

Como’s Nico Paz scored twice, while Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramón also found the net. Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation for United.

Following the defeat, United captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the team’s tactical approach, particularly the decision not to press Como’s defenders more aggressively.

Fernandes argued that allowing opponents time and space could give them confidence and make it difficult for United to regain possession. He said the decision on how the team should press rested with the manager and his staff.

Carrick, meanwhile, criticised his players’ work rate, insisting that no tactical system could succeed without sufficient effort in both attacking and defensive phases.

The disagreement attracted further attention when Fernandes was left on the bench for the Bournemouth match and did not feature.

Carrick maintained that the decision was based on footballing considerations rather than punishment, but the omission of the club captain added to the scrutiny surrounding the team’s internal dynamics.

Defender Lisandro Martinez had also publicly criticised the club hierarchy earlier in the season following a defeat to Atletico Madrid, raising further questions about the atmosphere around Old Trafford.

United consider alternatives but keep faith for now

Although United have opted against an immediate managerial change, reports indicate that the club has already begun considering potential replacements should Carrick be dismissed.

Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and former Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann have emerged among the names linked with the position. Antonio Conte has also been mentioned in earlier reports, although no appointment has been announced.

The decision to retain Carrick for the Chelsea fixture provides the club with an opportunity to assess whether the team can deliver an immediate improvement without making another change in leadership.

Carrick had earned the permanent position after guiding United to third place last season and securing Champions League qualification. His previous results had strengthened the case for continuity, but the current campaign has proved considerably more difficult.

The club’s struggles have also prompted scrutiny of recruitment decisions, injuries and the performances of established players. Some reports have suggested that senior figures believe the squad should be producing better results despite the challenges.

Chelsea clash offers immediate test

United’s visit to Chelsea will be Carrick’s next opportunity to arrest the decline and ease pressure on his position.

The match comes at a critical point for the club, with the team needing points to move away from the relegation zone and restore confidence among supporters.

The immediate focus will be on whether Carrick can improve United’s defensive organisation, raise the team’s intensity and find a more effective attacking approach against a difficult opponent.

Attention will also be on Fernandes, whose absence against Bournemouth followed his public comments about the manager’s tactics. Whether the captain returns to the starting line-up against Chelsea remains uncertain.

For now, United’s hierarchy has chosen to give Carrick more time rather than make an immediate managerial change. However, the decision offers no guarantee of long-term security, with the team’s results and performances likely to remain central to discussions about his future.

Saturday’s encounter at Stamford Bridge therefore represents a significant opportunity for Carrick and his players to demonstrate that they can halt the slide and begin rebuilding confidence at Manchester United.
