Man Utd line-up vs Chelsea decided as Bruno Fernandes returns but Leny Yoro dropped

Manchester United face Chelsea as Michael Carrick and his squad look to end an eight-match winless streak.

It has been a long week since Manchester United last played. Michael Carrick, surprisingly, is still in the job despite back-to-back maulings from Como and Bournemouth. The United hierarchy have kept faith in Carrick and his players have all taken a vow to turn things around at Old Trafford. Their bid to start afresh begins at Stamford Bridge against Xabi Alonso's Chelsea this afternoon (12.30pm).

United are on an eight-match winless streak and have won only two of their 12 matches so far this season. Chelsea vs United is the most drawn fixture in Premier League history, with 27 of the last 68 meetings ending level.

But the Red Devils desperately need a morale-boosting three points in west London. And Express Sport picks the United XI we think could come away with a much-needed victory down south...

Kobbie Mainoo's return to training is a boost but Manchester United shouldn't rush him back given there are another two matches to play before the November international break. Restore him to the starting XI against Roma instead.

Given it's been such an introspective week at United, I'd ask the bulk of the team who played Bournemouth to go out there and prove a point to the world. One change, though, would be Diogo Dalot doing a left-back shift while Leny Yoro moves out to right-back.

Lisandro Martinez replaces Ayden Heaven. Andrey Santos also drops out of the side, with Bruno Fernandes' return seeing Youri Tielemans drop back to a deeper role alongside Carlos Baleba.

Amad Diallo starts on the right with Matheus Cunha restored to the left wing. With Dalot out of position behind him and Marcus Rashford unlikely to play, Cunha needs to produce.

Bryan Mbeumo starts as an auxiliary centre-forward with Benjamin Sesko out injured until 2027.

A win over Chelsea would ease some of the growing pressure on Michael Carrick and give United their first league victory since September. To achieve that, they will need to make some changes.

Leny Yoro is not a left-back by any means and was terrible against Bournemouth. Noussair Mazraoui isn't a natural left-back either, but he should be capable of doing a better job than the Frenchman in that position.

Youri Tielemans has struggled since joining the Red Devils in the summer and could be taken out of the firing line in midfield, with Kobbie Mainoo coming in.

A line has supposedly been drawn under the Bruno Fernandes saga, which suggests he could return to the starting line-up against Chelsea.

And with Benjamin Sesko still out injured, Matheus Cunha could feature up front for United with Bryan Mbeumo out wide.

The United squad are said to all be on the same page in wanting to turn their current slump around.

How long that lasts is up for debate, but one thing is certain, United won’t do anything of note this season if Bruno Fernandes doesn’t start firing again.

Expect him to service an attack consisting of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Marcus Rashford, should the Englishman pass a fitness test.

Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans to play behind, while a centre-back partnership of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez seems the sensible choice.

With Chelsea likely to start Danny Welbeck in place of the injured Joao Pedro, it makes sense for United to prioritise experience and physicality in central defence, and this could allow them to shift Lisandro Martinez across into the problem left-back position.

Diogo Dalot and Youri Tielemans have underwhelmed of late - though who hasn’t? - and the returning Kobbie Mainoo could help solve one of those problems if fit to start.

In attack, Benjamin Sesko’s absence remains an issue but a recall for Bruno Fernandes after clear-the-air talks, coupled with a fluid trio at the sharp end, may allow United to take advantage of a Chelsea back line which can be got at.

Lammens; Mazraoui, Maguire, De Ligt, Martinez; Mainoo, Baleba; Amad, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo
