The race for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title in Morocco has entered its decisive stage, with just eight countries remaining from the 24 that began the competition. Among them is Nigeria’s Flamingos, and Ghana’s Black Maidens, who each are now two victories away from reaching the final as they prepare for a crucial quarter-final showdown against Venezuela, and Japan respectively.

With representatives from four continents still in contention, the last-eight fixtures promise a fascinating battle for places in the semi-finals. For Africa, Ghana and Nigeria carry the continent’s hopes, with the Black Maidens facing Japan before the Flamingos take on Venezuela.

Nigeria’s progress has been particularly encouraging after a difficult start to the tournament. Having lost their opening Group B fixture 2-1 to Poland, Akeem Busari’s side responded with victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions DPR Korea before eliminating Mexico in the round of 16.

The Flamingos will now be looking to take another significant step towards their first semi-final appearance since finishing third at the 2022 edition in India. However, standing in their way is a Venezuelan side that has already demonstrated its ability to upset the odds.

Ghana vs Japan: Black Maidens carry Africa’s hopes

Ghana have emerged as one of the most entertaining sides at the tournament after recovering from an opening defeat to put together an impressive run into the quarter-finals.

The Black Maidens announced their attacking potential in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Brazil before securing victories over Canada and Argentina. Their progress was sealed in dramatic fashion through a penalty shootout triumph against the South Americans in the round of 16.

They now face a Japanese team that has been equally impressive, although the Asian side finally conceded its first goal of the competition in its comeback victory over Kenya.

Japan had previously recorded three consecutive wins against Zambia, France and Venezuela without conceding, underlining the defensive discipline that has made them one of the tournament’s strongest contenders.

The encounter presents Ghana with an opportunity to extend Africa’s presence in the semi-finals, but they will need to combine their attacking threat with greater defensive concentration against a Japanese side that has shown considerable quality throughout the competition.

DPR Korea vs USA: Defending Champions face another major Test

Two-time defending champions DPR Korea will face the United States in another heavyweight quarter-final encounter as they attempt to keep their title defence alive.

The North Koreans have been ruthless in front of goal, recording 6-0 victories over Puerto Rico and Morocco, alongside a 6-1 demolition of Poland during the group stage.

Their only defeat came against Nigeria, who produced one of the biggest results of the tournament with a memorable 3-1 victory over the defending champions. However, Ji Yun-nam’s team quickly recovered, responding by dismantling hosts Morocco to secure their place in the knockout rounds.

The United States have also experienced contrasting moments on their journey to the last eight. They began with convincing victories over Samoa and Kenya before suffering a 3-2 defeat to China PR, which set up a difficult round-of-16 meeting with Spain.

Maddie DiMaria proved decisive against the Europeans, producing a stunning goal to send the Americans into the quarter-finals.

The meeting with DPR Korea represents another significant examination of their credentials, with the defending champions expected to provide a stern test of the Americans’ ambition.

China PR vs Brazil: Attacking firepower on display

China PR and Brazil will go head-to-head in what could be one of the most entertaining fixtures of the quarter-final stage, with both teams boasting impressive attacking records.

China were among the standout performers in the group stage, scoring 13 goals under coach Ma Xiaoxou while winning all three of their matches to finish with a perfect record.

Their attacking brilliance was tested in the round of 16 against France, where they had to rely on the composure of goalkeeper Niu Ziqi to advance through a penalty shootout after a difficult contest.

Brazil have also demonstrated their attacking quality, scoring 12 goals during the group stage before producing another entertaining performance against Poland in the last 16.

The South Americans played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with the Europeans before advancing on penalties, with Nathy once again proving her importance by making crucial saves to help Brazil progress.

With both countries capable of producing goals in numbers, their quarter-final meeting could come down to which side manages the pressure better when the contest reaches its decisive moments.

Nigeria vs Venezuela: Flamingos target historic Semi-Final return

For Nigeria, the quarter-final encounter against Venezuela represents another opportunity to underline the Flamingos’ growing confidence and strengthen Africa’s challenge for the title.

Busari’s team did not have the smoothest route out of Group B after losing 2-1 to Poland in their opening fixture. The defeat immediately put pressure on the Nigerians, who knew they needed a strong response to keep their qualification hopes alive.

They delivered exactly that with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico before producing one of the tournament’s biggest shocks by defeating defending champions DPR Korea 3-1.

That result not only restored belief in the Nigerian camp but also demonstrated the Flamingos’ ability to compete against the very best in the competition.

Nigeria carried that momentum into the round of 16, where they defeated Mexico 2-1 to book their place among the final eight. The victory was another important statement from Busari’s young side, who have continued to grow in confidence since their opening-day disappointment.

Their next opponents, Venezuela, will arrive with their own ambitions after producing one of the biggest surprises of the round of 16.

Despite collecting just three points during the group stage, La Vinotinto raised their game when it mattered most, recording a 1-0 victory over Germany to eliminate the European side and secure a quarter-final ticket.

The South Americans are now chasing a third consecutive appearance in the semi-finals, making them a dangerous opponent for Nigeria despite their inconsistent group-stage campaign.

For the Flamingos, the challenge will be to maintain the intensity and discipline that carried them past DPR Korea and Mexico. Their attacking quality has become increasingly evident, but they will need to be clinical in front of goal and remain organised against a Venezuelan team that has already shown it can punish more fancied opponents.

A victory would take Nigeria into the semi-finals for the first time since their historic third-place finish in India in 2022, keeping alive their hopes of another memorable campaign on the global stage.

With Ghana also representing Africa in the last eight, the continent will be hoping both sides can deliver and ensure African football remains firmly in the hunt for the trophy.

For Busari and his Flamingos, however, the immediate focus is clear: overcome Venezuela, secure a place in the final four and move one step closer to bringing the U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy back to Nigeria.
