Lille vs Lens (1-0): Olivier Giroud Wins the Derby for LOSC in Ligue 1

Olivier Giroud’s 86th-minute strike lifted LOSC Lille to a 1-0 victory over RC Lens in the 125th derby du Nord at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, propelling the club into second place in the Ligue 1 standings. Foot Mercato reported that the 40-year-old forward reacted quickest to turn in a rebound after Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser blocked Nabil Bentaleb’s long-range shot.

How Olivier Giroud Decided the 125th Derby du Nord

Friday night’s fixture in northern France carried high stakes beneath a tense atmosphere, where Lille had an opportunity to put pressure on their direct adversaries and soar into the top three while relegating Racing to five points behind. Foot Mercato noted that Lille entered the match sitting third in the table with an opportunity to create separation from their rivals, while Lens held eighth place, and the encounter unfolded in front of more than 45,000 spectators.

The hosts controlled possession throughout the first half, testing Risser repeatedly. Ethan Mbappé curled a shot just wide of the post in the 18th minute, before Risser produced a fine stop to prevent the locals from opening the scoring on a powerful header from Soriba Diaouné in the 19th minute. The 19-year-old French player, who had provided a decisive assist in Monaco the previous weekend, then forced a sharp save before striking the crossbar with a powerful shot from the edge of the box in the 33rd minute. Lens offered minimal attacking threat before the break, though Saud Abdulhamid tested Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer with a deflected effort in the 39th minute. Davide Ancelotti was even cautioned just before halftime following a vehement reaction to an uncalled foul on Mbappé, while possession at the break was clearly lilloise without the Dogues managing to take the lead.

Stellar Goalkeeping Keeps Both Sides Frustrated

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both goalkeepers producing decisive interventions. Foot Mercato and news.footeo.com both highlighted the crucial saves made by Risser and Özer to keep the score level for more than eighty minutes. Launched by a quickly taken free-kick by Bentaleb, Mbappé was denied in a one-on-one duel by Risser in the 54th minute, while Lens squandered the match’s most glaring counter-attacking chance moments later when Florian Thauvin, who was copiously whistled by Pierre-Mauroy, lost his duel against Özer in the 58th minute. Risser then delivered a superb save against Haraldsson in the 66th minute, while Kyllian Antonio rescued Lens twice in front of Mbappé and then Giroud.

The substitution proved decisive for the hosts when Bentaleb unleashed a 25-meter drive that Risser could only parry into the center of the area, allowing Giroud to arrive on time and net the game’s only goal in the 86th minute, moments after Bulatovic had grazed Özer’s top corner with a header in the 83rd minute.

Standings Implications After Nine Matches

News.footeo.com reported that the victory ended a four-match winless run for Lille across all competitions.

For Lens, the defeat marks their fourth reverse of the league season and leaves the club static on 13 points, halting a three-match winning streak in domestic play. The Sang et Or must now regroup ahead of their upcoming fixtures as the autumn schedule intensifies across French football.
