Manchester City have reportedly emerged as frontrunners to sign Borussia Dortmund’s highly rated teenage winger Mathis Albert ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.
The 17-year-old American has attracted interest from several European clubs following his emergence in the Bundesliga, with City believed to be pushing hardest to secure his services.
According to Sports Mole, citing TEAMtalk, City made a formal approach for Albert during the summer transfer window and remain determined to bring the youngster to the Etihad Stadium.
The Citizens are reportedly prepared to offer the teenager attractive personal terms, having previously indicated their willingness to meet Dortmund’s valuation of around €20 million (£17 million).
Chelsea are also understood to have monitored Albert for some time and would be willing to pay a similar fee, while Arsenal and Liverpool have recently joined the list of interested clubs.
French champions Paris Saint-Germain had also made enquiries about the winger in 2025, although City are currently considered to be in the strongest position to complete a deal.
However, Dortmund are reluctant to lose one of their brightest prospects and have already turned down approaches, including requests to take him on loan.
The German club are reportedly preparing a new contract offer for Albert, whose existing deal expires in June 2027.
Despite Dortmund’s determination to retain him, the youngster’s limited first-team opportunities could influence his decision over whether to commit his future to the Bundesliga outfit.
Any potential move to England would have to wait until next summer, when Albert turns 18 in May.
Albert joined Dortmund from LA Galaxy’s academy in 2024 and has since established himself as one of the most promising young American players in European football.
The left-sided attacker made history when he became the youngest American footballer to feature in the Bundesliga.
He achieved the feat at 16 years, 11 months and five days during Dortmund’s 4-0 victory over Freiburg, breaking the previous record held by fellow American Gio Reyna.
Reyna had earlier surpassed the mark set by former Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic.
Albert has also represented the United States at senior international level and found the back of the net for his country.
While Dortmund remain confident of keeping Albert, City’s willingness to invest in his potential could make them serious contenders for his signature when the transfer window reopens next summer.
