FC Twente suffered their first home defeat of the Eredivisie season after losing 1-2 to FC Utrecht at De Grolsch Veste on Sunday, October 18, 2026. The match in Enschede turned volatile in the 63rd minute when 22-year-old visiting attacker Ángel Alarcón scored his second goal of the afternoon to put the visitors ahead following Daouda Weidmann’s earlier opener for the hosts, prompting a temporary suspension of play by referee Allard Lindhout, as Voetbalzone reported. Alarcón celebrated his decisive strike with a knee-slide toward Vak-P, which provoked home supporters into throwing plastic cups onto the pitch. Referee Lindhout immediately halted the game for approximately four minutes, ordering both teams toward the catacombs before deciding that staying on the touchline would suffice while the field was cleared.
Amid the disruption, FC Twente striker Wout Weghorst grew visibly furious with Alarcón’s goal celebration, demanding a yellow card for provocation by gesturing with his hands behind his ears toward the referee. While Lindhout opted against punishing the goalscorer with a card, Weghorst’s persistent protests required intervention from FC Twente manager John van den Brom, who physically restrained his veteran striker to prevent a escalation.
Television analysts Johan Derksen and Valentijn Driessen delivered scathing assessments of Weghorst’s behavior during an appearance on the talk show Vandaag Inside. Derksen labeled the forward an emotional bomb that can explode at any moment,
while Driessen, serving as the chief football writer for De Telegraaf, argued that Weghorst had no right to complain given his own history of theatrical celebrations. That boy who celebrates a goal and then Wout is angry again,
Driessen stated on the program, noting that manager Van den Brom had to step in because Weghorst completely lost his composure.
Speaking to ESPN after the final whistle, match-winner Alarcón clarified that his goal celebration had been misinterpreted by both the home crowd and the opposing players. The Spanish winger explained that sliding on his knees is his routine way of celebrating every goal and offered an apology to the Twente supporters for the resulting uproar and the temporary stoppage. Despite the chaos, the match resumed quickly with twenty-five minutes remaining, leaving the final score locked at 1-2.
The home defeat leaves FC Twente stationary in fifth place in the Eredivisie standings with 17 points from 9 matches. Meanwhile, FC Utrecht climbed to eleventh place in the league table, raising their points tally to 11 for the campaign.
