GREENDALE — The Blackhawks got their playoff opener started with a first-minute goal. After 100 minutes of soccer, they sealed the deal in penalty kicks.
The ninth-seeded Fort Atkinson boys soccer team prevailed 3 to 1 in penalty kicks over eighth-seeded Martin Lutheran after the teams were tied 2-2 following overtime in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal on Thursday.
Blackhawk captains Connor Luebke and Ian Copp took the first two penalty kicks and each found the back of the net to set the tone, while junior goalkeeper Elijah Baldry made huge saves on the first two Spartan penalty kicks to put the pressure on the hosts.
Fort's Manny Flores netted his penalty kick and Baldry saved his third penalty kick to secure the Blackhawks' victory.
The Blackhawks (8-6-1) got the scoring started quickly as Henry Belzer received a pass from Lucas Recob and finished it in the back of the net just 41 seconds into the game.
Martin Luther (9-9) answered in the 20th minute when Hudson Comaris finished off a corner kick from Kallen Colombe on the near post.
After Tristan Dommershausen was fouled 40 yards out from the net, Luebke found Belzer, who hammered a header home in the 48th minute.
The Spartans equalized in the 67th minute when Brayden Nicholson's shot deflected perfectly into the back corner of the net.
Neither team could score a goal in the two 10-minute extra time periods, which led to PKs.
Both teams finished with 21 shots. The Blackhawks finished with 10 on frame compared to the Spartans' 15. In addition to his three penalty-kick saves, Baldry finished with 13 saves, while Liam Jagusch of Martin Luther stopped seven shots.
Fort travels to face top-seeded Shorewood in Saturday's regional final, which starts at 4 p.m.
