The SEC has already delivered its share of surprises this college football season, and with November approaching, the conference's College Football Playoff picture remains anything but settled.
While several contenders will enjoy a much-needed bye week, others are preparing for matchups that could have major implications for both the SEC championship race and the expanded College Football Playoff.
No. 3 Georgia, No. 11 Texas, No. 12 Ole Miss and No. 17 Florida will all be in action Saturday, and another upset or two could dramatically change the conference's postseason outlook.
With the first College Football Playoff rankings scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, the stakes are only getting higher.
The biggest SEC matchup of Week 9 features No. 3 Georgia (6-1) and No. 17 Florida (5-2) renewing their annual rivalry in Atlanta instead of the normal neutral site in Jacksonville.
Georgia enters the weekend as one of the conference's strongest playoff contenders, but the Bulldogs cannot afford to overlook a Florida team capable of creating problems.
The Gators have already shown they can compete with some of the SEC's best teams, and an upset over Georgia would give Florida a significant boost in the playoff conversation.
For Georgia, a victory would strengthen its position heading into another important SEC matchup against Ole Miss on November 7.
A loss, however, would give the Bulldogs two defeats and further complicate an already crowded conference championship race.
Two other SEC programs hoping to remain in the playoff picture are No. 12 Ole Miss and No. 11 Texas.
Both enter Week 9 with 5-2 records, leaving little room for another disappointing performance.
Ole Miss is coming off a 34-27 loss to Texas and now returns home to face Auburn. The Rebels have an opportunity to get back on track, but another defeat would seriously damage their postseason aspirations.
Texas, meanwhile, hosts Mississippi State after picking up that important victory over Ole Miss.
The Longhorns have worked their way back into the playoff discussion, but with two losses already on their resume, they need to keep winning.
For both programs, Saturday is about more than avoiding an upset. It is about maintaining a realistic path toward the postseason.
Several other SEC contenders, including No. 9 Kentucky, No. 10 Alabama, No. 15 LSU, and No. 16 Tennessee, are off this weekend.
That allows those programs to watch their conference rivals potentially help or hurt their postseason positioning.
Alabama and LSU will meet in Baton Rouge on November 7, while Kentucky travels to Tennessee the same day. Those matchups will create even more separation among the SEC's contenders.
But first comes Week 9.
With Georgia facing a ranked rival and both Texas and Ole Miss trying to avoid a third loss, Saturday could provide another round of answers in a conference that has offered very few certainties.
And with the first CFP rankings just days away, every result will carry added significance.
