ROCKANSON Iga is carrying more than his unbeaten professional record into the ring this Saturday — he is carrying the hopes of a nation as Nauru’s first professional boxer.
The 22-year-old will face Fiji’s Watisoni Rokotuitoga in a six-round super welterweight bout at Vodafone Arena in Suva, determined to continue a journey that began in the amateur ranks under the guidance of his father.
Iga, who has more than 40 amateur fights behind him, is preparing for only his second professional contest, but his ambition stretches well beyond the ring.
“I’m the first Nauruan boxer, professional boxer in Nauru, so I’m the first one,” he said.
“I’m going to do my best to reach where I want to reach.”
The milestone has not come without years of preparation.
Iga began boxing with his father in Nauru before travelling to Fiji, where he spent two years training and developing his skills.
He credits the experience gained in Fiji, along with the support of friends and fellow boxers, for helping prepare him for the professional ranks. His development has also been shaped by training with Fiji’s Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and former national welterweight champion Winston Hill.
“I’ve learned from him a lot,” Iga said.
“I’m grateful for the things he’s shown me, I’ve learned a lot from him.”
Iga made a winning professional debut in July, defeating Masitogi Rokotuva at the Kings Boxing Promotions event in Suva
Now he faces another test against Watisoni Rokotuitoga, who also won his professional debut in July, beating Peniasi Vunisa.
The Nausori boxer has been preparing for the contest for several months and expects a tough challenge from the Nauruan.
Iga, however, is relishing the opportunity to test himself against a local opponent.
“He’s the one who challenged me,” he said.
“He said I’m not going to forget the night, so let’s see. I hope he’s ready because I’m always ready.”
The ZEG Boxing Promotion event is scheduled this Saturday November 7, with the pair among the fighters expected to feature on a card showcasing local and international talent.
For Iga, the occasion is another step towards his dream of establishing himself in professional boxing.
“I just love fighting,” he said. “The next thing I know I’m excited to turn pro and, yeah, just love it.”
