Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas is one of the greatest point guards in NBA history, and he gave his list of the five greatest players of all time when he appeared at the XCEL Summit for Men. Thomas has called Philadelphia 76ers superstar LeBron James the GOAT in the past, and that was indeed who he put at the top.
“If I’m doing my all-time, like everybody who’s ever played, then LeBron James is No. 1,” Thomas said, via Black Enterprise. “And here’s why I say he’s No. 1. I say he’s No. 1 because in sports, competition, your No. 1 is the guy who leads in every category. He leads in points, rebounds, steals, assists. I mean, he’s across the board in the top five.”
James is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with 43,489 points. The 41-year-old also ranks fourth all-time with 12,033 assists and sixth with 2,423 steals.
James’ incredible longevity is what has helped him rack up these statistics, as he is currently in his 24th NBA season. To go with this, he has won four titles, four Finals MVPs, four MVPs, one scoring title and one assists title. It’s an impressive resume.
Now, before crowning James as the GOAT, Thomas believed that title belonged to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. To no one’s surprise, Abdul-Jabbar was the second name he mentioned here as well.
“LeBron, Kareem,” Thomas said. “Ain’t nobody had a better basketball career than Kareem, okay? And I don’t even know if I can get to three others. But when you look at Kareem: high school domination, college domination, NBA domination, 40 years old, a phantom foul. Forty years old, we doubling Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.”
Abdul-Jabbar won at every level. He led Power Memorial Academy to three straight New York City Catholic high school championships and two national high school boys championships. Abdul-Jabbar then headed to UCLA, where he won three straight national titles. Considering all of this, there was a lot of hype surrounding him when he entered the NBA in 1969, and he lived up to it.
Abdul-Jabbar won six NBA titles, two Finals MVPs, six MVPs, two scoring titles, and one rebounding title. Now, playing with the great Magic Johnson on the Los Angeles Lakers certainly helped, and Thomas mentioned him here as well as he shared the rest of his list.
“Now, Magic gets the benefit because he played with Kareem so you gotta throw him in there too,” Thomas said. “Magic, Kareem, LeBron, [Michael] Jordan. Gotta put Jordan in there, and my fifth would be probably Bill Russell. Ain’t no probably about it. But why Bill Russell? Because what he did on and off the court.”
Johnson won five titles, three Finals MVPs, three MVPs, and four assists titles in his career. He is widely regarded as the greatest point guard of all time.
Michael Jordan is generally regarded as the greatest player of all time, but he and Thomas famously do not get along. They were embroiled in a heated rivalry during their careers, and tensions are high today.
Thomas had Jordan as his GOAT at one point, though, and it’s easy to see why. The Chicago Bulls icon won six NBA titles, six Finals MVPs, five MVPs, one DPOY, and 10 scoring titles. He three-peated twice in the 1990s with the Bulls, completely dominating that decade.
Last but not least, we get to Bill Russell. Russell won a record 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons. He was also a five-time MVP and led the league in rebounding four times. The DPOY award didn’t exist during Russell’s career, and Finals MVP was only introduced in his last season, which is why he doesn’t have a lot of those to his name as well.
While what Russell accomplished on the court was incredible, he was also a civil rights activist off it. He fought against racial inequality and is someone today’s stars have to thank for the position they find themselves in.
So, all in all, this was a solid list. Thomas had shared his all-time starting five recently as well, and he surprisingly left James off that one. The 65-year-old believes he is the GOAT, but still doesn’t have him in the lineup, which is interesting.
