Dazzled Diamonds deny No.1 ranking their main driver

Coach Stacey Marinkovich insists her Diamonds team isn't being driven by the fear of surrendering their No.1 netball ranking for the first time in 13 years in the final Constellation Cup clash.

The Australian team have had a disappointing Cup campaign, already losing the trans-Tasman trophy 3-0 to New Zealand ahead of the final match at John Cain Arena on Wednesday night.

With a two-goal lead at three-quarter time, the Diamonds crumbled under pressure and lost 52-49 in game three against the Silver Ferns in Sydney on Sunday.

Worse could come if they drop the final match, with another victory elevating the Kiwis to the status of world's best and denting the Diamonds' confidence ahead of their World Cup defence in Australia next year.

But Marinkovich said the ranking wasn't their primary motivation, but rather to string together four solid quarters of netball.

"To be honest, you always want to keep your ranking and you want to win the championships, but that's not the motivation for this team," the coach said.

"We make no excuses for our performances and we understand where it is that we need to improve, so the focus is on how do we go out there and play 60 minutes of netball that ends up getting us a result, as opposed to chasing an outcome that doesn't affect the process."

Kate Moloney is back in the mix to run out on her home court after recovering from a second finger injury.

The star centre dislocated a finger on her left hand after the first centre pass in game three, after missing the opening match with a laceration on a different finger on the same hand.

Marinkovich didn't reveal her line-up for the last Test against the Commonwealth Games champions, but was happy with how the team rallied without Moloney.

"Yeah, still looking at different things ... I thought the line-up that went out there did a really good job," the coach said.

"That's a strength that's coming of the group, that there's good versatility and there's things that we still need to explore.

"New Zealand are playing incredible netball and there's been those tight tussles - it's been physical and the teams are adapting and shifting.

"So, for the players to step out there and to show their skill sets and strength in combination with others is a huge plus for us.

"It's about really taking on the challenges of how do we fulfil 15-minute quarters."
