Fiorentina and Atalanta played to a 2–2 draw at the Stadio Artemio Franchi during the ninth matchday of the 2026/27 Serie A season, leaving both clubs searching for the momentum required to escape their respective league struggles, according to match reports published by ANSA.
The fixture offered two distinct halves of football in Florence. Atalanta controlled the opening 45 minutes before Fiorentina responded with a high-intensity surge after the interval. While the result halted Fiorentina’s recent losing streak, it left the Viola winless at home since April 13, extending a frustrating sequence at the Franchi. For Atalanta, managed by Maurizio Sarri, the point provides some relief, though defensive lapses prevented the side from securing a victory. Paolo Vanoli’s Fiorentina side lined up in a 4-3-3 formation featuring Viery in place of the injured Pongracic, alongside João Mário making his first start for the club following a brief seven-minute appearance against Inter at San Siro.
Atalanta absorbed early pressure from the hosts before taking command of the midfield late in the first half. Maurizio Sarri’s side studied the tactical blueprint from Como’s recent victory in Florence, allowing the hosts to expend energy through early efforts from Pellegrino, Jiménez, João Mário, and Franco Mastantuono during the opening fifteen minutes. After withstanding this initial spell, Atalanta gained control as Gaetano and Éderson began to dominate against Cher Ndour and Nicolò Fagioli in midfield. Just a minute later, Atalanta nearly doubled their lead when Nikola Krstović directed a close-range header toward the bottom corner, only for De Gea to deny him with a sharp save on the turf.
The second half began with an unusual interruption when referee Federico La Penna of Roma 1 was forced off due to an injury, yielding his duties to fourth official Livio Marinelli of Tivoli, with match officiating duties supported by assistants Khaled Bahri of Sassari and Davide Moro of Schio, alongside V.A.R. Matteo Gariglio of Pinerolo and A.V.A.R. Federico Dionisi de L’Aquila. Atalanta had already been forced into an early change inside four minutes when Hinnich Kristensen sustained an injury and was replaced by Giorgio Scalvini. Fiorentina manager Paolo Vanoli reacted to the deficit by introducing Oulaï for Nicolò Fagioli at halftime. The tactical adjustment paid off quickly as the Viola penned Atalanta into their own half.
Fiorentina maintained their aggressive tempo and seized the lead in the 61st minute. João Mário gathered possession on the left flank, drove toward the center, and unleashed a strike from the edge of the area that deflected off Marko Obrić and brushed goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi’s foot on its way into the net. Atalanta refused to collapse under the pressure. Sarri attempted to shift the momentum by introducing Mario Pašalić and Jonathan Rowe in place of Gaetano and Eljif Elmas in the 58th minute, while Ibrahim Sulemana later replaced Zalewski in the 84th minute. In the 74th minute, De Ketelaere slipped a pass through to Zalewski, who cut inside and drilled a precise left-footed shot past a stationary De Gea to level the score at 2–2.
The closing stages saw open play and rapid transitions as both sides hunted a winner. De Gea produced two exceptional flying saves in the final minutes to deny Atalanta, including a stoppage-time stop against De Ketelaere. The referee’s final whistle confirmed a share of the spoils, keeping both teams mired near their respective positions in the Serie A standings as they turn their attention to upcoming fixtures. The disciplinary record saw yellow cards issued to Elmas, Viery, Pellegrino, Gnonto, and Obrić across two minutes of first-half stoppage time and four minutes of second-half stoppage time, following which Sarri’s squad returned to work on Friday morning for a closed-door training session at the Centro Bortolotti in Zingonia.
