Texas high school football shocker: King takes down No. 19 North Shore

In 10 meetings between King (Houston, TX) and North Shore (Houston, TX), King had never beaten its city rival on the gridiron.

That all changed on Friday night.

A dominant start and a stellar second half were enough to propel the visiting Panthers to a 42-21 win over North Shore, the No. 19 team in the Super 25 and No. 4 team in the Southwest Super 15.

King opened the scoring when quarterback Khylan Davis called his own number and took it in from a few yards out, capping a drive that lasted just over four minutes. A quarter later, the Panthers found the end zone again as Davis connected with running back Arhiyan Montgomery from a few yards out.

North Shore didn't take long to answer, as Javoris Taylor connected with La'Damian Defreeze a minute and a half later for the Mustangs' first points of the evening.

Davis once again led King on another scoring drive late in the half, finding Antwon Sanders for his second touchdown pass of the evening with 2:15 remaining. Taylor and the Mustangs would not be outdone, though. He found Christopher Tolson for a 20-yard touchdown, making it an eight-point game at the half.

From that point on, it was all King and Khylan Davis.

The Panthers' senior leader scored a rushing touchdown in the third and another in the fourth, turning an eight-point King lead into a 22-point lead.

North Shore added a rushing touchdown with 10 minutes remaining, but King had an answer. Junior quarterback Ty'Rin Gatson got involved, scoring a short rushing touchdown, and the rout was on.

With the win, King moves to 7-1 and takes sole possession of first place in District 17-6A. North Shore is now 7-1 and falls to second in the district.

The loss was also the Mustangs' first since Nov. 7, 2025, ending a 13-game winning streak for the defending UIL Class 6A Division I state champions.
