Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers remain winless after Week 8, with the noise surrounding offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel only getting louder. Still, the head coach didn’t have much to say about the coordinator’s future.

The Athletic’s Noah Furtado repeatedly asked Harbaugh about McDaniel after the game, but the coach’s vague answers only prompted the reporter to keep pressing for a clearer response.

Fans, Analysts Impressed by Noah Furtado’s Approach With Jim Harbaugh

The Chargers lost 24-9 to the Rams on Sunday, marking their second straight game without a touchdown. Coming off a bye week that gave the team time to make adjustments, the offense again failed to show much, if any, improvement.

Harbaugh said the Chargers understood what was going wrong.

“We’re aware of what the issues are, and we’re the only ones that can fix them,” he said, according to Furtado’s account of the exchange.

Furtado then asked whether McDaniel would continue calling plays. Harbaugh answered yes before shifting his focus back to the game.

But Furtado wasn’t satisfied. He followed up with questions such as, “But what from the past seven games tells you that this can be fixed? Why are you keeping him? What is the rationale?”

Harbaugh still didn’t provide much of an explanation. “I’ve talked about us. The team. It’s the team, the team, the team. It’s us,” the head honcho later said when Furtado told him he was being “vague” about McDaniel’s future.

For several X users, Furtado’s persistence was exactly what they wanted to see.

“This is awesome. I need more reporters on coaches like this,”sports journalist Ethan Kassel wrote.

The Ringer’s Bryan Curtis also praised Furtado for continuing to push for an answer.

“This is some serious following up. The follow-ups come with follow-ups,”Curtis wrote.

Fans responding to the clip were just as enthusiastic about Furtado’s approach.

“This… more of this!! Thank you, [Noah Furtado]. Thank you,”one supporter wrote.

Another fan wanted that same level of accountability to extend beyond the coaching staff.

“GRILL HIM, Noah!!!! We need Hortiz and the Spanos family to get interviewed too! They’re not safe from this either,”they wrote.

KNBR’s Jack Loder also praised the reporter. “Furtado is so, so good, man,”Loder wrote.

The exchange came as criticism of McDaniel continued to build. Former Chargers All-Pro Shawne Merriman had already questioned the justification for giving McDaniel more time before Sunday’s loss.

“There’s no justification, in my opinion, to try to figure it out with Mike McDaniel based on the start they’ve had. It’s not like they started slow or had just some miscues here and there and needed to get on the same page. You’re 0-6… And so that’s going to be hard to justify, in my opinion,” Merriman said on his podcast.

The Chargers currently rank No. 32 with a PFN Offense Impact Score of 61.1.

Harbaugh can defend his staff, but at 0-7, questions about McDaniel’s future aren’t going away. With playoff hopes all but gone, the Chargers will need to show why he deserves to keep his job.
