Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has shared his views on Andoni Iraola's team selection for Sunday's Premier League clash with Arsenal and the decision to start teenager Trey Nyoni.

The Reds hope to make a statement to the rest of the league this weekend with a victory over the current champions. A win at Anfield would put them within three points of the top two and potentially into the title race.

That said, Iraola has made some bold selection calls, including awarding Nyoni his first Premier League start. The 19-year-old has long been viewed as someone with huge potential at Liverpool, and this season he is being afforded more opportunities than ever.

He has already featured in all but two of Liverpool's eight league matches so far, although all of those appearances have come from the bench. Now, he is being trusted from the start in midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister and Florian Wirtz.

It's a bold call given Nyoni's age and experience, but one Sturridge believes is right given the strides the youngster has already made this season. "Nyoni has been very good so far this season, comfortable in possession, brave enough to drop deep and pick up the ball," the ex-Liverpool striker explained to Sky Sports pre-match.

"He is making interceptions and he has earned this opportunity. He has earned it.

"[Ryan] Gravenberch hasn't been at his best. we know he is a top player. I believe he will get back to his best. I think the manager has made the right call for this time."

Iraola does have experienced players on the bench he can use to bolster the midfield if necessary. Liverpool is boosted by the return of Dominik Szoboszlai to the matchday squad, while Gravenberch is also available.

That said, despite his lively appearances in recent weeks, fellow teenager Rio Ngumoha starts this afternoon's meeting with Arsenal on the bench. Lewis Koumas is also among the substitutes, having featured midweek in the Carabao Cup.

Also speaking to Sky Sports, Arsenal legend Ian Wright noted that Nyoni must be making a significant impression behind the scenes to be afforded such a big opportunity this afternoon.

"He must be so good in training to be getting this opportunity," Wright added. "It is brilliant to have a manager who is willing to put you in for such a huge game."
