Super Eagles forward Terem Moffi last night scored a consolation goal for Hamburg, but it was not enough as Eintracht Frankfurt won 3-1 in the DFB Pokal second round tie at the Volksparkstadion..
The Nigerian striker started up front in Hamburg’s 3-4-3 and kept probing, even as Frankfurt went ahead through Robin Koch in the 56th minute. In the 63rd minute, Moffi got on the end of a header that would have been his first goal of the night, but he couldn’t convert it.
Frankfurt then pulled clear. Jonathan Burkardt, the Player of the Match, made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute, and substitute Younes Ebnoutalib added a third in the 75th .
Moffi gave the home fans something to cheer in the 79th minute. Fellow substitute Patson Daka set him up, and Moffi finished from close range to make it 1-3. It was Moffi’s moment of the night, and it lifted a stadium that had been quiet since the visitors went ahead.
Hamburg could not find another goal. Moffi was replaced by Norwegian teammate Alexander Røssing in the 82nd minute, leaving with a rating of 7.4, the joint-highest on Hamburg’s team sheet. Hamburg had the better of the chances, with an xG of 2.95 to Frankfurt’s 1.69, but Frankfurt were more clinical.
Moffi’s Super Eagles teammate Raphael Onyedika put in a solid shift in Frankfurt’s midfield and finished on the winning side, though he was booked in the 85th minute.
Though Hamburg are out of the Pokal, Moffi can still take some positives from a night when he was a constant threat and got on the scoresheet.
