After a loss to the previously winless Titans dropped Indianapolis to 2-4, the changes began with the firing of longtime general manager Chris Ballard. Another defeat the following week left the Colts at 2-5, and two major trades followed.
From blockbuster trades to parting ways with long-term general manager Chris Ballard, the last few weeks have been noteworthy for the Colts. Now, as more moves seem to be on the horizon, they could be aiming for a fresh beginning. And one analyst believes they could find it with Shedeur Sanders. Fans, though, aren’t too sure.
From a projected first-round pick to the 144th overall pick, the draft fall was dramatic for Sanders. Eventually, when he got the starting job as a rookie, he finished second-to-last on PFN’s Quarterback Impact Metric, while throwing more interceptions than touchdown passes.
However, given that the Colts need a fresh start and Daniel Jones is unlikely to be their answer for long, Evan Cohen of ESPN Radio suggested that Sanders should be an option for Indianapolis.
“I believe the Indianapolis Colts should trade for Shedeur Sanders immediately, and Shedeur Sanders should be the starting quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts,” Cohen said. “He is not going to start for the Cleveland Browns anytime soon.”
His reason was simple, as he expanded, “He will mask all of the deficiencies. Not because he is a great quarterback yet, but simply because he is a willing distraction. Not because he has done anything but fans, let’s focus on what he’s doing versus than everything else.”
Cohen believes that could give the franchise some leeway to figure out their other pieces. But the fan base itself isn’t too sure if Sanders is the right guy for them, given his level of play so far and the lack of draft capital they have to find a true franchise cornerstone.
“So Colts should get Shedeur because he’s a divisive distraction AND should immediately start him on that basis,” one fan argued, “How can you take Evan seriously when he says something like that?”
Another fan was harsher in his assessment of the second-year quarterback, stating, “Why exactly… Shedeur is a train wreck. Why would anyone trade for him? He’s terrible.”
However, for those who still had belief in the youngster, a potential move couldn’t come soon enough, with one fan imploring, “Please God, make it happen.”
Another fan added, “Please get us out of Cleveland. #Free2,” as the hashtag quickly became popular on social media platforms.
Expanding on his point, Cohen wrote, “The Colts should not worry about a face of the franchise; they need someone to mask the franchise. Shedeur is the proper distraction (he is not one) the organization needs. Make everyone look at him and not the dysfunction, all while giving him the chance to be your guy.”
However, one fan wasn’t sure such a move was coming, as he fired back, “Cleveland GM won’t TRADE SHEDEUR SANDERS.”
It remains to be seen if such a move does come to pass. Sanders was locked in a battle for the QB1 spot over the offseason with Deshaun Watson. However, the veteran got the job to begin the year, and with the Browns taking off at 5-2, the possibility of Sanders getting the starting job back seems to be diminishing every week.
Ite has fueled speculation about whether Cleveland could consider a trade. For now, though, the Browns reportedly are not shopping him and would prefer to keep him unless a compelling offer emerges before the deadline.
