2026 Ballon d’Or: Burna Boy Presents 2026 Socrates Award To Bukayo Saka

Nigerian music star Burna Boy presented the 2026 Socrates Award to Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka during the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday.

Before handing over the honour, Burna Boy spoke about his football academy in Nigeria, explaining that he launched the initiative a few years ago to promote the development of football in his home country.

“Something I started a few years ago, just to support the football culture back home. Hopefully, inshallah, one day I’ll come back here to see one of my people getting an award in Ballon d’Or,” he said.

The singer later presented the award to Saka, recognising the Arsenal star’s charitable contributions and commitment to helping disadvantaged children.

The Socrates Award honours footballers who use their platform and resources to support humanitarian initiatives and create a positive impact in their communities.

France Football established the award in 2022 in partnership with Peace and Sport, naming it after the late Brazilian football legend Sócrates.

Saka earned this year’s recognition for his charitable work with BigShoe, an organisation that provides medical assistance to children in need.

Through his support, children have gained access to life-changing medical procedures, including sight-restoring surgery.

Previous winners of the award include Senegalese forward Sadio Mané, Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior and Spanish footballer Jenni Hermoso.

In 2025, the award was presented to the Xana Foundation, established by Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique in memory of his late daughter.
