Footballer in intensive care after sickening foul sees Spanish second tier match abandoned

The Segunda Division match between Tenerife and Andorra was abandoned in stoppage time after Jesus Owono collided with Jesus de Miguel, who suffered serious injuries

Both sets of players were visibly distressed

Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel is in a stable condition in intensive care after being on the receiving end of a sickening foul - before going into cardiac arrest. The incident happened on Monday during a match between Tenerife and Andorra in the Spanish second division, which was level at 2-2 before the referee chose to abandon the game in stoppage time.

De Miguel, 30, sustained injuries around his head and chest after Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono came rushing out to clear a long ball and appeared to hit the Spaniard with his knee. De Miguel was left laying motionless inside the centre circle, with some players in tears while he received medical attention. Footage shows Owono making a U-turn to check on De Miguel.

On his way to hospital, the Madrid-born forward suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated by paramedics in the ambulance. Tenerife confirmed in a statement that the De Miguel was admitted to the University Hospital of Nuestra Senora de Candelaria on the island and is 'stable despite the severity of his condition'.

"The medical services at said hospital will be present and will report when there are updates," the club added.

Andorra posted on social media: "We want to send all our strength and best wishes to Jesus de Miguel after the serious incident suffered during today's match.

"We hope he recovers soon. A very strong hug to the player, his family and Tenerife."

Owono's red card was the third of the match. Earlier in the game, Tenerife had surrendered their 2-0 lead which came courtesy of first-half goals from Christian Gomis and Enric Gallego.

Andorra's Lautaro De Leon replied with a penalty in the 83rd minute, but he was remarkably sent off after a skirmish with Tenerife goalkeeper Dani Martin while attempting to get the ball back. Martin was then shown two yellow cards in quick succession, and Andorra soon found an equaliser through Stefan Golubovic to set up a grandstand finish at Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez.

But the fixture was abandoned at 2-2 following De Miguel's injury. Tenerife sit four points above Andorra in the Segunda Division.

De Miguel signed for Tenerife in 2025, signing a three-year contract after the club had been relegated to the third tier. He helped Tenerife earn promotion back to the Segunda Division, scoring 11 goals in 29 games along the way. After spending most of his career in the lower leagues, De Miguel played his first professional match with Castellon in 2024.
