A WASHINGTON high school football star from a family of NFL players was killed aged just 16 by an alleged drunk driver.
Deejay Tuiasosopo was in his first season with the Federal Way High School football team and had dreams of becoming a state champion.
The 16-year-old tragically died just hours after playing a game on Friday night near to where the action had unfolded.
According to KOMO News, Tuiasosopo was standing on the sidewalk late Friday when he was struck by a car.
The vehicle had smashed into another car at an intersection before fatally travelling in Tuisosopo’s direction.
Tuiasosopo was pronounced dead at the scene while a 29-year-old man was arrested on a vehicular homicide charge for allegedly being under the influence.
Police have revealed no further details about the man arrested nor anything about the other driver who was crashed into’s condition.
Tuiasosopo, a 220-pound running back and linebacker, was set to graduate high school in 2028.
His close friend and teammate David Rodriguez described him as someone who ‘had dreams’.
“He was serious about his sports; he had dreams, he wanted to be a state champion,” said Rodriguez, who explained they’d been friends since 6th grade.
“And the fact he can’t do that, that’s just, it just feels sad.”
Tuiasosopo’s great uncle was Manu Tuiasosopo, drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 1979 before later joining the San Francisco 49ers.
The first-round defensive tackle won the Super Bowl with the 49ers in the 1984 NFL season.
Manu’s children – Leslie, Marques, Matt, and Zach – were all serious athletes too, with all proving to be elite at college football, baseball or volleyball level.
Marques Tuiasosopo was a famed University of Washington Huskies quarterback drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2001.
Zach was a fullback for the Huskies in the early 2000s and had NFL tryouts, while Matt was a former utility player in Major League Baseball.
Leslie Gabriel is the current head coach of the Huskies Women’s Volleyball team and was “one of the best blockers in Pac-12 history” during her playing days there.
It would have been no surprise had Deejay Tuiasosopo gone onto great things as well but for his tragic passing.
Two uncles of Tuiasosopo told KOMO they were both on scene Friday night and were left numb as they tried to process the loss.
A memorial was created along the fence of the gas station lot where Tuiasosopo sadly died on Saturday.
